The Miata oil filter is located in a terrible location if we are honest. It is on the engine block right under the intake manifold. It is difficult to reach and because it is mounted sideways, oil gets everywhere when removing it.
 
Since engine oil is the most frequently changed fluid on a car, relocating it to an easier to reach location will pay off in the long run. It also keeps the underside cleaner during oil changes.
